Thursday, Aug. 29. This morning was relaxing. We hung out at Melissa’s. Trevor babysat while Melissa and I did a little shopping. She wanted to show me “The Skirt Store”. A really cool shop, not to far away, that sold only skirts. Some were new and some were used. What an awesome store. I found a really cute, sporty skirt for $6, that is fully lined and will be perfect for fall and winter! That was exciting.
After lunch, we headed into Strasbourg, where we had reserved tickets to Sight and Sound Theater’s production of “Noah”. When we were in PA last year, we had seen “Jonah” at this same Theater, which was awesome! So we were expecting great things once again. We were not disappointed.
You aren’t allowed to take pictures of the actual play, so here’s a couple of pictures we took while waiting for the show to start.
“Moses” is going to be the next play that Sight and Sound does. So they had this HUGE stone statue of Moses in the entryway.
After the show was over, we had a picnic nearby with some church friends, who were also at Sight and Sound. That was a lot of fun. And the kids got to run off some energy on the playground. We then headed back to Melissa’s where we would spend our last night before heading off on the next part of our adventure.
Fieday (Aug. 30), we packed up once again, after a nice breakfast and saying good bye to our good friends, and headed off toward Washington DC. This was to be our last and final place of vacation. We ended up having a flat tire on the way, which caused us to have to stop on the busy interstate to get it changed, then we had to find a tire store to fix the flat. Unfortunately our tire was beyond fixing, so we had to buy 2 new tires. This not only drained our “vacation fun money” but it also added about 3 hours to our trip. But I’m trusting it was for a reason. We didn’t let it ruin our plans. We just didn’t buy as many souvenirs as we would have like to.
After arriving at our hotel and checking in, we went to the local subway station to see about getting tickets. Our hotel was actually in Maryland, and we had planned on riding the subway into DC and walking to the different sites. This seemed like the best thing to do until we figured up how much the subway costs for 5 people! Good Grief!! Abort plan A. To shorten the story details….we ended up driving into DC, finding a parking garage that had an all day flat rate price (much much cheaper then the subway) and walked to where we wanted to go.
DC is HUGE!! We didn’t realize just how spread out everything was. And it was also very crowded. Apparently, since it was Labor Day weekend, everyone decided to go to DC on vacation. But we made the best of it, and planned our day.
Here’s some pictures of the different things we saw.
The Lincoln Memorial! Very, Very Cool! I was greatly impressed.
The Washington Monument. This was a bit disappointing. There was an earthquake not too long ago, so DC is worried about the structure of this monument. SOO…they have it completely surrounded by some kind of covering and the area close to it is blocked off.
Golden Stars for the fallen soldiers.
At the Indiana Marker inside the WWII Memorial.
Ford Theater. This was awesome! And quite moving. To see the actual place where that tragic event happened was just amazing.
And they had on display, the actual gun that Booth used to kill Lincoln. Wow!
The place where Lincoln sat is still there. They have the area closed in and preserved, but you are able to actually see it. The chairs and everything are still there.
Sitting in the seats at the theater. Surprisingly enough, they still do plays at this theater.
Across the street from the theater, is the house where they took Abraham Lincoln after he was shot. So we headed over there to see it as well.
This is a replica of the bed that Lincoln died in. But this is the actual room. It’s all behind glass to keep it preserved.
Glorianna was very sad to see the picture of Lincoln on his deathbed.
Ford Theater had their own Jr. Ranger Books. So of course we had to add those to our collection. This makes #4 on this trip.
Washington DC had a JRB for the rest of the memorials and such. So with this final book collected, the kids have gotten 5 badges on this trip. I’ll have to do an actual count to see what our grand total is, but I think we are somewhere around the 20’s.
By the time all of this site seeing was done, we were very tired, and it was getting late. We had walked a total of 5 hours, not counting the time we took to sit and rest or to get a quick bite to eat. So we called it quits for the day and headed back to our hotel room.
