Over the last few weeks, a few mom’s have gotten together and had a unit study on the Pilgrims. The kids have done activities, read books, and made projects to help them learn more about the Pilgrim way of life.
This is a “Tithing Man” Stick. The children and even adults, were not allowed to whisper, smile, make noises, or fall asleep in church. The “Tithing Man” sat in the back of the church. He had a long stick. On one end was an animal tail, and the other end had a round wooden ball. If you were caught sleeping, you got tickled with the animal tail. If you were caught whispering or generally “being bad”, you got rapped on the head with the wooden ball, end. Yikes!!
This is a small diorama of “The Keeping Room”. The Keeping Room, was the main room in a Pilgrim’s house. Most houses only had one room, but others had the keeping room and a bedroom.
Following the unit study, the kids put on a small skit, and hosted a dinner for the grandparents. This was a lot of fun.
My kids were “Running Deer” (Glorianna had to have an indian name. The boys had official Pilgrim names, but Glorianna was just “Indian Girl 3”, so we gave here a name. haha)
“William Bradford” (Zion)
“John Carver” (Azariah)
Here’s a few pictures of the skit and a few of after the skit. I was in a bad spot for picture taking, but you’ll get the idea. I’ll try to get the video uploaded later.
