Pennsylvania Part Five — Gettysburg and Departure

Ah Gettysburg. This was the part of the Trip that Trevor had been looking forward to. He loves this part of history.

The day started out a bit cold and rainy, but then the sun came out. It ended up being a beautiful day. There was so much to see. There is no way to see it all in just one day, but we squeezed in as much as we could. Trevor had a second great grandfather fight in the Civil War and was at Gettysburg. So while we were there, we looked to see if we could find the monument of the division he was in. We succeeded. So Trevor and the kids posed next to that monument. That was pretty cool to see.

We visited the gift shop first. The kids picked up a “junior ranger” book, so they could earn their badges for that, and we bought the kids Civil War hats. They loved those and it also made for great photo shoots. Altho I’m not sure there was actually pink hats during that time period. Ha Ha . (see Glorianna’s hat)

We hiked to the top of “Big Round Top”, ran across the battle field, charged down the hill where Col. Chamberlin made his famous charge, climbed on numerous cannons, named as many generals as we could, and just had a grand old time. We also visited the spot where Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. Zion had to memorize this for school, so we filmed him reciting it at the actual spot. That was pretty cool and I think he got into it a little more then he normally would have.

I had thought of putting a caption with the pictures, but there are so many, that I figured it would bore the readers to tears. So here’s just a cluster of the many pictures we took. (and this isn’t even all of them)

I’m hoping Trevor and I can actually go back to Gettysburg one day…just the two of us, without the kids. Then we could take our time looking at everything in the area.

After Gettysburg, we headed back to the farm and then headed to church that night. This was to be our last day in PA.

Thursday, we took our time packing up. The kids wanted to get a few more “fun farm things” in before we left, so I took the opportunity to do a little shopping with Melissa. The kids stayed behind at the farm, and I had a couple of hours of girl time. It was very nice.

We ended up leaving the Farm at about 2:30. We knew it would be late getting home, but it was worth it to let the kids play a bit longer. Glorianna actually burst into tears when we had to leave, and told me later that she wished Faith was her sister. She really enjoyed playing with Faith.

The very pregnant kitty (mentioned in a previous post) had disappeared the day before. She reappeared right as we were leaving, not so pregnant anymore. The kids were so excited and wanted to go searching for the kittens, but there was no way we could spend another hour (or more) looking for them. So we are awaiting a picture from the Farmer’s wife, whenever she finds them.

Over all it was an awesome trip. I’m so glad we went and hope to go back again very soon.
