Crystals, Volcanos, Rocks and a Dino Dig

School has been jam packed with lots of cool and fun stuff lately.  We’ve been learning how crystals form, how volcanoes form and erupt, and a lot about rocks and minerals.

We have made our own crystals and rock candy, our own volcano and watched it erupt and even went on a Dino dig.

I didn’t get any pictures of our volcano, but here’s a few pictures of the other things we have done.

Rock Candy…Yummy!!  This was very messy, and it took a few days to actually form.  But it was very cool to watch and make.

Charcoal Crystals.  These crystals formed on charcoal pieces that we mixed with salt, water and vinegar.  Not only did crystals form on the charcoal pieces, but they formed on the side of the bowl as well.

And last in our study, was rock and digging for bones.  Zion got to play “Paleontologist” and dig for dinosaur bones.  He started with a big block of plaster that covered enough bones to make a small dinosaur model.  This took much, much longer then we expected.  The first day, Zion worked on it (off and on) for about 3 hours.

Finally getting to the bones.

Day 2 , Zion spend about another 2-3 hours working on the rest of the block.  He was quite happy when he finally finished digging out the last bone.

Once all of the bones were found, he put them together to make a mini T-Rex Model.

TA-DA!

Zion’s “Z-Rex” is now on display in his bedroom.  ROOOAAAARR!
