School Updates

School is moving along at quite a nice pace.  The kids are learning a lot, as well as the teacher.  It’s amazing really, how much I have forgotten from my own years of schooling.  I feel like I am learning all over again.

We started school on Aug. 1st and even tho we have taken breaks here and there and even snuck in a short vacation, we are still ahead of schedule.  Each kid is on a different lesson/day of school, because of the different types of curriculum they are using, but they are all still ahead of schedule.

Zion is on day 52, Azariah is on day 49, and Glorianna is on day 60.  At this rate I think we well finish at our set goal of early May.  Each year we plan to finish in early may but some how we end up schooling until late May and sometimes early June.  But this year, I really think we will finish on time.

So now I have a question for all you “preschool” moms.  Glorianna is doing a preschool curriculum right now, but it is so packed full of stuff that it seems to me more Kindergarten level, then it does preschool.  She is 4 1/2.  By the time she actually finishes this curriculum, she could probably skip K all together.  So my question is this…do any of you preschool moms have this issue?  Do you think its a good idea to let her skip K and go ahead and move her to 1st grade, next school year? Her birthday is in May, so she will be 5.5 when next school year starts up.  I hate for her to have to repeat everything she has learned this year, but I”m afraid that skipping K will cause her to slow down when she gets older.

So…what’s your thoughts on the matter?

I live in a small town growing up and the public school didn’t have kindergarten. I was 5 in December and started school in the fall. Pretty much 5.5 yes old and I did fine! I’m sure if Glorianna is doing well she’ll be just fine!

    Hi Anna Mae
I would definetly start 1st grade next year! Does she know her sounds and blends? counting? Thats good to know to start 1st grade because they are learning to read.
    God bless you

she does not know blends yet, but does know sounds and counting. She can count to 20 but sometimes misses 18. She know how to write and say all her letters, all big and most small, and what sounds they make.

I think it depends on what curriculum you will be using for 1st grade. I finished K with Emma last year, but I went ahead and enrolled her in K this year in charter school. A Beka K seemed so advanced with the blends, reading, and math, that I thought it would be good to reinforce the info while giving her a chance to grow socially/personality wise, minus the pressure of learning a bunch of new stuff. (Also, there weren’t any 1st grade openings–is that terrible?!) I’m glad I did all that I did with A Beka, though–she’s reading so much better now and her teacher really expects a lot from the class, so it was good to have that background.

You could always start 1st grade with her on some subjects and K for others to find a middle ground. Maybe just giving it a few more months will help you decide.
