Yesterday (Saturday) was our yearly homeschool Spring program. Sometime we theme it around Science, sometimes History, sometimes the Bible…it changes from year to year. This year, there was not really a set theme. We just had to find something that fit under the title of “God in His Universe, God in His People, God in His Word”. So the kids were free to use whatever subject they wanted to do.
Glorianna wanted to do a disply on Moses. She wanted to dress up and recite the 10 commandments. She even wanted a beard. I thought it was a bit odd that she didn’t choose a Queen or some other Lady from the Bible, but Moses was who she wanted. Her display was on the 10 Plagues and the 10 Commandments. She made all of the plagues and made her own commandments. She did a very good job. We spent several days coloring, cutting, glueing and putting things together. She had a lot of fun and did very well at memorizing the 10 Commandments. She didn’t do any reciting at the program, but she did ask people if they knew “this commandment” or “that commandment”. And she recited them all for any of the parents who were walking around looking at the displays.
Here she is with her display, at home, without the beard.
Here she is at the program, with her display AND the beard.
The beard lasted longer then I thought it would. She finally took it off about an hour into the program because it was itching her.
Azariah wanted to do his display on Elijah. He decided to do the story of Elijah via timeline, that he was going to draw. I was impressed. He did a great job. His finished project consisted of 7 pictures he had drawn, showing different stages in Elijah’s life, a typed out story of Elijah, and he made a Mt. Carmel and a Chariot of Fire. He’s quite the little artist and designer.
Here is his “Mt. Carmel” display.
And here he is with his display.
Zion chose to do Abraham Lincoln. Well, it actally got chosen for him. He was studing Abraham Lincoln in school, and one of the projects he was required to do, was to make a display of Abe Lincoln. AND since we were heading to PA, we figured he could memorize the Gettysburg Address, visit the place where Abe gave his speech, and recite that speech for the program. So this is what he did. I bought him a costume and he worked on the speech, in the van on the way to PA, while we were there, and on the way back home. So in about a weeks time, he had the whole thing memorized. He did a very good job reciting it at the program.
Here is a picture of him doing is speech. Trevor will be uploading the video soon, so you can see him in action.
All of the kids did an excellent job. There were several skits as well as lots of displays. This is always one of my favorite events that the homeschool group does. I love to see the ideas of the kids brought to light.
