Thanksgiving started off with me and Trevor heading out to the woods, in hopes of bagging a deer or two. It seems to have become a thing to take me hunting Thanksgiving weekend. It’s a time when Trevor is off work and we can leave the kids overnight with gramma.
I was excited. I had fun last year, even tho I didn’t see anything. It was also very, very cold, this time last year. There was frost and ice on the ground. Brrrrr. This year was better. It was still cold, but not below freezing. We tried a different spot this year as well. A friend of ours let us use his 2 person stand, so Trevor was with me, instead of off in another tree somewhere.
We saw 2 deer fairly early. A doe, which walked off in the opposite direction of where we were, and a buck. The buck was decent sized, even if the rack was a bit small. Trevor and I both took aim. Reason #1…in case I missed, he was there or back up and Reason #2…in case I froze up. ha ha . Well I didn’t miss and I didn’t freeze up. But I didn’t get the deer either. I couldn’t see very well thru my scope. It was still a little dark, but I could see the deer fine. I just couldn’t get my scope lined up right. I was afraid to shoot, because I didn’t want to wound him. So I kept delaying, hoping to get my scope lined up right. I waited a bit too long. By the time I finally got my scope figured out, he was gone. I guess that’s what I get for not trying my scope first. It was quite exciting, tho. I was shaking so bad afterwards, from the major addrinilan rush, that I didn’t think I’d ever quit. We got down our of our stand and headed back to my mom’s for Thanksgiving dinner, around noon. By this time I was mad at myself for not shooting. So I asked Trevor if we could go back later. He just laughed and said, “Anna May’s got the ‘fever’”. Ha ha … Indeed I do.
Back at my mom’s, we had a very nice dinner with the family. Dad was out in Ohio, hunting, so he was the only one missing. The food was good, as always, and lots of yummy desserts. We rested up a bit, after eating our fill, and then Trevor and I headed back to the woods.
Unfortunatly, we didn’t see anything this evening. But I still had fun. It was great to spend the day with just Trevor…even if it was in a tree. =)
This is the last weekend of gun. I don’t really know if I can squeeze in another hunting trip or not. I guess we shall see.
