We finally got around to taking the trip to Red River Gorge for Trevor’s birthday. It was a lot of fun (and there were also a couple of disappointments) but it was nice to get away. It was also our anniversary weekend, so we kind of included that into our trip as well.
Red River Gorge was beautiful. The cabin was really nice and had a gorgeous view. This was the first time the kids have been at a cabin, so they were pretty excited about that part.
We got to do some hiking while we were there too. One of the hikes had a nice little waterfall.
Another one of the hikes had a “natural bridge” at the end. That was pretty amazing. I wasn’t brave enough to go to the top of the bridge, so I stayed at the bottom while Trevor and the kids went to the top.
The kids tried to do a “Lion King” copy on this log, but there were too many small branches sticking out of it and they kept falling off.
The REALLY skinny path leading to the top of the natural bridge.
Getting stuck coming back down the REALLY skinny path.
There was also a really cool tunnel through part of the mountain that you could drive through. Sorry that the picture is so bad. It was hard to take through the van window.
One of the disappointments was that we didn’t get to go canoeing while on our trip. The water level was really low because of the lack of rain, so it wasn’t going to be any fun to have to push the canoe as often as riding in it.
After a few days of hiking, hanging out, playing games and relaxing at the cabin, we headed to the Smokey Mountains in North Carolina to meet up with some friends and do a little camping for two nights. My least favorite part of the trip. I really don’t like tent camping. But I survived. It was a really nice campground but there was 0 cell service, which was fine. It was nice to be away from the phone for a couple of days. But because of this I didn’t carry my phone around with me, so I didn’t get any pictures.
The kids had a good time swimming in the lake, fishing, riding on the jet skis and Trevor enjoyed the relaxing time and fellowshipping with the Believers there. On our last night there, at around 9 PM, it started to rain. No problem, right? We’ll just hang out in the tent until it passes over and if it rains all night we will hang out more tomorrow. If only our tent didn’t leak. And I mean leak enough to get everything very wet. Apparently our waterproof cover wasn’t so waterproof after all. (our second disappointment) So after about 30 mins of sitting in the leaky tent trying to figure out what we should do, Trevor makes the decision to cut our trip a little bit short and just pack up and head out. Our bedding was soaked and even some of our clothing and food got wet so there was no way we could stay in the tent that night. So we pack up, left the tent for the trash pile, said our good byes and headed for home. It was around 10:30 pm when we left the camp site, so we weren’t sure how far we’d make it. It was a good 6 hour drive back home. We made it about two hours down the road, enough to get us out of the mountains and back into civilization and cell phone signal, found a hotel and crashed for the rest of the night.
We made it home around 3:30 pm on Sunday and now it’s time to recover from the trip and start the school year!
