Basement Remodel

Right before we went to Sandusky, Trevor decided that while we were gone it would be a good time to get the electric box/wiring updated. This is something he’s been wanting to do for a while now but just didn’t have the time to get it done. So he talked to a brother in the area who does electric work and they set up the day and time to have that done. We needed to have the electric turned completely off while the work was getting done, which was going to take a couple of days, so what better time than while we were out of town.

Since we had to tear up part of the wall and ceiling to do the wiring, Trevor decided that he would just update the entire room instead of just patching back the holes from the wiring update. So after we got back from Sandusky, he spent a couple of days pulling off the drywall and the rest of the ceiling.

When we pulled off the drywall we found these in the wall. Cool! They were pretty dirty, so I cleaned them up and gave them to a friend of mine who collects antiques.

Insulation added to the outside walls! This is going to help so much. It’s always so cold in this room, in the winter time, so having the insulation is going to improve things a lot.

And now we have “can lights!” That’s so much better than the ugly long florentine light that was in there before.

Walls and ceiling are up!

Mudding, Sanding, Mudding again, Sanding again…..It’s a messy process. There’s drywall dust everywhere and it’s getting tracked all over the house. But I realize it will be worth it when the room is done, so I’m trying to be patient and not complain. It took a little longer than we originally hoped. By the end of week 2 we still weren’t ready to paint. But the drywall was finally finished and we just had to do a bit more mudding and sanding.

This wall looks so much better. It had this weird indent near the door that who knows why it was designed like that…so Trevor made it flush with rest of the wall and it looks normal now.

And finally after three long weeks we started the painting process. Woo!!

We decided to do an accent wall with wood paneling instead of a different color paint. We have an exposed vent in the basement that we can’t do anything about so Trevor thought the industrial rustic look would go well down there. I love the rustic look anyway, so I couldn’t wait to see the new wall.

Ta Da!! I love the way it turned out.

Next was installing trim around the windows and a new baseboard.

It’s so nice to have the house back to normal now and things back where they belong. 4 1/2 weeks with two rooms unusable is way too long. We had to do school at the kitchen table because the family room stuff had to get moved into the school room. So all the school books were piled on the floor in the living room until this project was completed.

So here’s an over all view of Before…

And after!

We still have to hang curtains and decide what to put back on the wall and what to toss, and eventually we would like to get new flooring, but for now we are done! It looks so much better now.
