Sandusky Ohio Trip

So Christmas/New Year’s Vacation ended and we started school again, but only for 3 days. January 8-12, Trevor was scheduled to be in Sandusky, Ohio for a work tech convention. After attending last year, he decided it would be great if we joined him this year. He’s staying at the Kalahari Resort which has a huge indoor waterpark, and there were a few “kid” classes that the kids could do at the convention if they wanted. And we would have a good sized room to stay in, so I decided to take some schoolbooks along to work on when we weren’t doing classes or other things.

We arrived on Monday evening and after checking in, Trevor gave us a tour of the place so we’d know how to get around when he was in class and not available.

The kids had a blast. We discovered that if we went to the waterpark before 11, we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves. So that was a good way to spend the mornings. The kids also attended a 3-D modeling class where they learned to create a cup on the computer and then print it off on the 3-D printer. This was amazing. Watching the big machine take what you had created and turn it into an actual object was so cool. The kids then had the last hour of class to create and print out what they wanted, using the skills they had just learned in class.

Zion decided to finish his cup by adding a handle and some extra “fluff”. The instructor liked it so much that he printed off an extra cup so he could show the kids in the other classes. I thought that was pretty cool.

Azariah created a keychain and a bowl but could only print off one thing, so he printed off his bowl.

Glorianna created and printed off her keychain. It was a little too thin (which we didn’t know when she designed it) so the printer had a hard time with it. But it still came out cute.

We ate at one of the restaurants in the resort one night. The boys tried fried calamari. Glorianna wouldn’t touch it. She said the fried mini octopus with its legs still attached grossed her out. haha The boys said it was ok, not all that great and that the shrimp was much better.

We were really close to Lake Eerie, so one afternoon after Trevor was finished with his classes for the day, we took a quick drive to see the lake. It was freezing cold and part of the lake was frozen over. It was very pretty but we didnt stick around long.

We also saw Ceder Point off in the distance.

This was the kids favorite ride at the water park. They all sat on a giant tube, went through a tunnel, around a “swirly” and out another tube.

The kids also got to do a couple games of lazer tag and play a “Star Trek” simulation game. Each person had a different job and had to work with the other team on the other side of the wall. Zion did communications, Azariah was in charge of weapons, Trevor was the engineer, Glorianna was the science person and the red head girl was the captain. I was a passenger – meaning I just sat and watched- haha. They all had fun tho and learned a lot about teamwork.

We had a kitchen in our room, so the kids and I all ate in the room. Trevor’s meals were all paid for and provided by the company. So we only got to eat together once. But we all got ice cream a few times from this really awesome ice cream shop on the first floor.

The Kalahari is Africa themed so they have these cool animal statues all over the place. Glorianna wanted her picture taken with “Aslan”. haha

Over all the kids had a blast and Trevor learned a lot from the classes. I got to read “The Magnolia Story” by Chip and Joanna Gains and absolutely loved it. Its an amazing book. I may end up reading it again on our next get away.

Now we are back to reality and all that goes with it. Vacation is officially over.
